New Location

Alrighty, as people might have already seen from Suu's awesome map, there's a New Thing called Riget, and I shall make with the explaining.

Shop Building: Riget
Upper level/lower level: Lower level
General Area: Adjacent to the Hospital.
Shop Type: research facility
Owners/Involved characters: Duke, anyone in White Fang
Hiring? Always
If so, for these positions: Researchers, scientists, monster-hunters, anyone who knows anything about making weapons, anyone interested in EVIL.

So. Duke proposes setting up a secondary research lab for White Fang in a facility separate from the usual White Fang building, citing the need for a larger lab equipped to handle live monster specimens, dangerous chemicals, or other projects that ought to be kept separate from a largely civilian workforce for safety reasons. To this end he picks out one of the abandoned buildings that seems to be a converted hospital. Not THE Hospital, of course, but something that might have once been an adjacent facility.

The upper floors (Ground, First, and Second) are fairly normal with the least amount of degeneration, only looking abandoned from the sparse furnishings that could belong to any large office type building and the dust on the floors. Everything is painted white and still looks serviceable, if faded and a bit water stained. High level monsters like those found in the Hospital don't seem to be in residence, although there might be a few nests of vermin. The windows, however, are barred.

The word Riget ("the realm" or "the kingdom") is etched into the stone arch over the doorway, while dødsriget (“the kingdom of the dead”) is painted on the door of the freight elevator with an arrow pointed down, possibly in reference to the morgue being kept in the basement. The personnel elevators have the word ‘basement’ scratched out on the button panel and the words ‘Old Kingdom’ written underneath. The below ground floors are full of archaic but possibly salvageable equipment, if one has the stomach to go through dirty, dusty rooms that look like Frankenstein’s lab. They seem to be larger than the upper building itself, spreading out underneath the street and adjoining buildings, which are total inaccessible wrecks. The white paint is peeling and the walls cracked, looking several years older than the walls just a floor above. Some of the doors are locked from the inside. Certain rooms are worse than others, full of horrific equipment or dark stains or even messages left scrawled on the walls.

The sub-basement is significantly more degenerated than the higher floors, full of pipes and water and maintenance tunnels and rusted doors that are chained shut, and generally looks like something out of Silent Hill.

Riget is also haunted, as it sits directly over one of Hojo’s abandoned labs, located down below even the sub-basement, which is why Duke and more especially his mistress want the building under his control in the first place. Parts of the lab are in the sub-basement, the rest is down in the sewer tunnels, and Duke intends to re-open some of the investigations that Hojo had been conducting. Jenova research, monster research, methods of trying to escape Purgatorium, how to turn the population into Jenova's slaves without alerting the gods, etc etc.

Given the nature of this lab and whatever history the building had originally, it is a magnet for malignant spirits. Riget’s foundations tremble with small, localized quakes, strange noises and unexplained happenstances abound, and employees will be under strict orders to stay out of the Old Kingdom for their own safety unless on specific salvage missions. On all floors, a little girl in a charred gray dress wanders through the halls and rings a bell. Water routinely floods certain hallways or rooms with no apparent source. Electrical equipment flickers. Monster sightings are reported but never confronted. Screams or weeping or laughter can be heard through the vents. The elevators routinely descend to the Old Kingdom for no reason, and move up and down floors even when empty. The spirits or monsters or both, which may or may not have been victims of Hojo or are older forces stirred by re-opened wounds, would be doing their best to try and draw unsuspecting victims down to the Old Kingdom or show them the truth about what is going on below the surface. Or just scare the hell out of them. Ghosts notoriously fail at clear explanations.

The sewer tunnels are a death trap for anyone who is not Hojo or currently bidding to become Jenova’s avatar. Monsters roam, ambushes are set, and the supernatural forces centered on Riget are strongest down in the bowels of the Old Kingdom. Not to mention Duke himself has every reason to silence a witness that happened upon his little secret. This building will hopefully provide a basis for a Jenova Plot or something like that, or if anyone in White Fang would like to DOUBT THE INTENTIONS of their new boss, Riget's ghosts would love to make your life bizarre/miserable help out.
