“Hey”
…. It’s the only word he managed to speak as he stood in front of the bleach blond whom is surrounded with a few popular faces. He just blew his chance big time to eventually impress this one person he had been admiring since the junior high. Great, he thought, fidgeting quietly as he felt eyes falls on him. He should just follow what Nao told him but no… He just had to approach this person with full confidence, only to crash down hard when his tongue froze for the right word. He could feel his own cheeks burn and the sting in the eyes indicates tears had begun to weld up at the corner of his eyes. A wave of frustration came upon him. He was about to turn around and run for his dignity when he heard the other greet him with those same warm smile Kai had fallen for.
The first sign of their relationship in the early spring of their first high school year…

“Uke-san, I’m not sure about this,”
“I promise you.. It’ll be great!” Kai secures his clutch around Reita’s wrist, dragging the poor boy to the bicycle shed. The two took off with Kai’s bicycle without breaking a sweat.
“Where are you taking me, idiot?” Kai giggled as he heard a hint of worry in Reita’s voice. It can’t be help. He is an important person from the student council and skipping school without a good reason is just against his nature or more so like breaking the oath. Reita tighten his grip on Kai’s shoulders and at the same time balancing his weight on the axle feet pegs of the rear tire of Kai’s bicycle.
“Somewhere fun!,” Kai replied, taking a right turn to a little detour which he only knew. That little detour of his consists of roads with a very steep slope and at the moment they are going downhill. “Hold on tight!”
Kai couldn’t help to smile when he felt the other secure their grip by locking his hands around his neck. Not in a strangling way mind you. As they went downhill, he could not to help to hear their echoes of happy laughter filling his heart, forgetting all those shit talks about them and all of the stares they get whenever they hang out together at school. He had forgotten all those pains he felt after being beaten up severely and those meaningless threats. He doesn’t care if people hate him for being close to Reita. All that matters to him is to see that happy face of his adored blond friend.

“Fuck! What did they do to you?” the first time he ever heard Reita cursing. “Shit, shit, shit,”“I-it’s nothing. I’m used to it,” Kai smiled, forcing himself up to his wobbly feet. A sharp pain on his ribs caused him to stumble forward but thankfully Reita’s strong arms caught him before he do so.
“Bullshit, man! I’m bringing you to the nurse!”
“No, Suzuki-san! I-I’m alright.. Seriously.. It’s nothing!,” Kai pulled off his trademark smile, hoping Reita would give in which he did.
“Fine, but I’m bringing you over to my place to treat your injury,”
They rode Kai’s bicycle all the way to Reita’s. Upon reaching Reita’s place he couldn’t help to feel a tinge of envy lurking in his heart. He had never had the chance to ever live this luxurious life of this guy possess. No wonder the other kids wanted to kill him so badly. Who wouldn’t want to be friend a person who has almost everything in his life? Looks, fame, fortune and heck, the guy is going to take over his dad’s company after he graduates!
“Hey, what’s with that face?” Reita asked as he put away the first aid kit aside, his face frowned. “Is it because of my house?” Kai could see disappointment in his eyes.
“No, no.. Your house is.. err.. lovely,”
“Oh,” a hurt tone resonates within that deep voice of his. Kai winced inwardly, realizing he had chosen the wrong words.
“Look, Suzuki-san. I don’t hang around with you because you are rich or good looking or whatever. I befriend you because I like you,” Kai spoke with care. He was afraid if he slipped his tongue and made things worse causing more confusion.
“Honest?”
“Honest,”
“Thank you…. Kai,”

The summer heat had been too merciless to him. Second year is not being kind to him either. Had he not to agree to join the special team for the summer school, he was sure he would be at the beach or somewhere else than the student council’s room. The stacks of proposal papers to be sign and complain letters are making him sick. Curse the heat for making it worse.
“Rei-ta-chan~,” Kai called playfully from the window.
“Kai, what the hell are you doing there?!! This is the second floor!” Reita half-shriek half-speak as he opened the window, pulling in the other male before hitting his knuckles silly on the brunette’s head.
“Aw.. well.. you did say I could come by anytime anyhow. So I figured I could escape those insignificant stares of I enter through the door. Plus, you fan girls are hogging the hallway..,”
“Oh, shit. Thanks for the heads up,” Reita grumbled as he finished packing his bags.
“Hey, we can always use my way,” Kai smiled and gestured him to the window.
Reita couldn’t help but to smile as he followed the brunette to his only escape route. In mere seconds, the two of them are laughing their heads off as they rode their way to the beach. The trip was short and they had a long good stay at the beach. They stayed until the sun began to set.
“You know what I like?”Reita suddenly blurted. “I would like this day to last forever,”
In an instant, he heard a small snap of a camera lens from Kai’s cell phone.
“What??!! You said you wanted it to last forever.. So I took a picture!”

“You wouldn’t believe this Kai! Remembered that girl we talked about? I just asked her to be my girl and she agreed and-hey where are you going?” Reita aske as Kai rose up from his seat.
“I’m- I’m just going to take a breather. I just finished one whole chapter of Japanese History after all. I’ll come back later,” Kai spoke without looking at Reita. He can’t or he might just cry there and stirred a whole lot of confusion to him.
“What’s up with him?” Reita asked as he watches the red and brown leaves being blown off from their trees from the classroom’s window.
The next day Kai was absent. And the after... and the after… until the last leaf falls off its tree and swept away by the soft autumn wind.

“I love you,”
“What?!” Reita blinked confusingly. Who wouldn’t?
Kai had been gone missing right before their winter break. No calls, no messages, no e-mails. No nothing and now he find his brunette friend here standing in front of him at the local park right after he had sent his date home. The guy looked pretty much messed up as if he had been through hell and back.... And is that a confession? Did he heard right? “What did you say-,”
“I said I love you!” Kai cried out. His body shook violently as pain shoots up in his spines, travelling rapidly to his nerves causing his legs to give in as he falls to his knees. He could feel the seizure coming up. “I-I… l-love you… Reita,”
“Kai! Oi Kai!,” Reita quickly knelt down right beside Kai, confused and scared. He had never seen Kai in such a state. “KAI!!”
___
“Didn’t he tell you?” Uruha, the honey blond guy who had been working at the same restaurant as Kai asked. Bewilderment in his eyes.
“Tell me what?”
“He was diagnosed with this weird disease-,” Uruha knitted his brow, trying to search for the right word within the big empty head of his.
“It is called cancer, idiot,” Aoi cut in, smacking the back of his lover's head who shoot a glare at him. "He was diagnosed with a fucking cancer,"
"Yeah, what Aoi says,"
At those words, Reita felt his world turned black.

To see his face had become a necessity for him. It would felt incomplete for the blond if he couldn’t see those warm innocent smiles and that ever so happy glint he could see in those eyes. He swore that he was swept away every time he heard those contagious laughs coming from that honest soul. Ever since the day he found out the truth of Kai’s illness, he had been coming in and out of the hospital giving his full support to Kai.
“Rei-chan, can I please please please have apple juice? From that store we used to go? I’m tired with the hospital’s. It sucked big time,”
“Yeah, sure.. I’ll get them as soon as you finish your dinner,” Reita stated as he resumed reading a book he had brought earlier with him.
“Aww,” a pout in his voice.
It was a few moment of silence between them as Reita was absorbed into his book and Kai finishing his lunch until Kai decided to open his mouth.
“Hey, Reita?” Kai was answered with a hummed, noting that Reita is listening. “Do you think I will live?”
In an instant, Reita closed the book he was reading and put it on aside to the table lamp across him calmly. He rose up from the chair and took a spot on the hospital bed, plopping down to Kai’s side. He brought up his hands up to Kai’s face and cupped his chins before planting a kiss on those pale lips. He pulled away with a smile as he rested his forehead on Kai’s.
“You will, I’m sure of it,” Reita whispered. “Even if you don’t physically, you will live on here,” he took Kai’s hands and brought up to his chest, placing it above his heart.
“You will live on here forever,”
___
He was only five minutes late. Just five minutes late…
“Reita? Is it alright if we come in?” Ruki, his older brother knocked on his bedroom door. Well, one might mistaken Reita as the older brother if it’s height wise but it is proven that Ruki took the role as the big brother just nice. For the moment, he is acting like one. “I’m taking your silence as a yes since you are not throwing any things to the door,” in an instant, the door to his bed room swung open with his brother coming into his room along with Aoi and Uruha.
“Anou.. we have something to give. The nurse gave this to us saying it was from him and it looks like he was saving this for tomorrow,” Uruha handed a neatly wrapped gift with a simple but cute wrapping paper and a small note attached to it.
To Reita-chan,
HaPiBa!
Sorry I couldn’t afford to buy you anything but hope this photo album would do. I have been collecting our summer pictures every time I managed to slip you out from Summer School. Sorry again. But I hope you enjoy it!
With lots of love,
Kai
p/s: Sorry if I couldn’t make it.. I really love you and hope to embrace you on your important day. Aishiteru mo Reita.
Forever your name in my heart.
Reita closed his eyes shut as he clutched the present close to his chest. His cries grew louder as he was held by his brother and the other two.
Yes, forever.
You will live on forever in my heart.
*HaPiBa - short for HAppy Birthday in Japanese. I dunno. they just say it that way.
