This thought has been sluggishly stirring at the back of what passes for my brain for quite a while now, and watching a Jools Holland Later compilation in a flu-befuddled stupor has finally forced it to emerge, blinking, into the half light of an Autumn afternoon... I think the reason I like Fall basslines is because at their best they sound like they are breaking open your ribcage and squeezing your heart.

At the risk of sounding very old indeed - most modern guitary music I've seen on the tv falls into my category of 'why did you even bother - you like and sound like you really couldn't be arsed' - kind of heavy sighing music.

That's a brilliant description of Fall music :-)

I suppose I like old school rock/indie at heart, where the band all look too cool for school and all the guitars are dangling somewhere around their knees...What I dislike (and did in the 80s too, when it reared its perkily grotesque head) is jolly, chiming guitar chords and jaunty rhythms that sound as though they might degenerate into jazz funk or afro-beat at any moment. If I was in charge, the likes of Vampire Weekend would have their instruments confiscated and be banished to the naughty step until they bucked their ideas up a bit!
