I have thought of getting one as well, but don't know too much about which brand is best ... etc. The folks on the knittinghelp.com forums would probably know more, they all rock

it seems like brother is a good brand to look into, but they're not being made anymore....
hmmmm...
thanks for the link!

Damn - from what I have heard, Brother has always been good, even when it comes to sewing machines. Searching on eBay might turn up some good finds in that department

brothers are always good....what are you looking to do with it exactly? what kinds of knitting, etc?

i'm thinking mainly clothing construction... sweaters and whatnot. handknitting(to sell) limits me to small, fast projects. i'd like to be able to produce larger projects more efficiently. i'm thinking i'd like to do intarsia and lace knitting on it also.

okay i just saw it on ebay....thats a good basic machine, and comes with a ton of the extras, which all can add up to major extra money later on....(like the intarsia carriage, etc).....its a single bed machine, tho, so you have to decide whether you want to do any double bed work or not....the ribber attachments (an entire second bed) can be super pricey if they dont come with it ( ... )

i highly recommend taking a machine knitting class at FIT (non-credit) with marian grealish...to see if you like it and whatnot. she was my instructor at parsons, and taught me how to use my machine. she may be able to help you get a hold of a machine, as well. there are different "cut" machines (gauges)...7 cut and 3 cut (stitches per inch)...7 cut is a finer gauge and 3 cut is a bulkier gauge (probably worsted weight and the like). i have a 7 cut machine.

brother doesn't make knitting machines anymore, true. you can sometimes get them secondhand off ebay and the like, but you never know what kind of condition they are in...occasionally they can be in need of major service/parts which can cost $$$.

you can do fully-fashioned knits on knitting machines quite quickly...so that's fun. beats hours of making things stitch by stitch, by hand, that's for damn sure. :P

if you ever want to come by and play with mine, you're welcome to...to get a feel for it.
