ok, this is probably going to sound dumb but please remember I'm a stranger to the whole knitting thing.

How did you finish it. You ran out of yarn - how do you work the new yarn in?

Does it leave some sort of crease, or do you just tie a knot in the old string to the new string?

Well there are two ways that I know how to do it:

1) take the length of yarn that's left and hold it together with the new length and knit using both as one strand until all you have left is the new piece.

2) just knit the next stitch into the new strand of yarn and go back to sew in the end pieces later.
