Kyo had not fought when Akito had caged him before his eighteenth birthday. In fact he had welcomed it as his punishment. Appropriately enough, it had been raining that day. Just like the day when…

Kyo flinched away from that thought, he couldn’t remember and still keep his sanity. However, as the clouds rolled over and the rain began to fall the memories kept intruding.

It was cold and wet and rainy. The cat hated days like this. Master had come to visit, which was always good - until he took the bracelet off. Kyo felt his bones lengthen, his muscles deform, his skin turn scaly and knew the real beast had been unleashed.

Honda-san ran on seeing him - he wasn’t’ surprised. He was surprised when she came up behind him later - which was her undoing. The beast had been caged for so long, it was almost feral, and it’s reaction on being touched was to lash out. Honda-san was defenceless, and the claws caught her.

There had been so much blood. The sight of it had restored Kyo to control and he had tried to stop the bleeding, but it was too late. Her last words were “Don’t blame yourself, and remember, the cat is still my favourite animal of the zodiac.”

Master has found him there, by the lake, still holding her. He had been left free until after her funeral, where it seemed that the heavens cried, and then he had been caged, to spend the rest of his life in this little room, trying to atone for his sins.

As the thunder raged outside and lightening split the sky in two, to the listeners in the Sohma compound the maddened, grief-stricken cries of the caged cat formed a eerie counterpoint to the melody of the storm, an audible representation of the sorrow that could only be healed when the singer was freed by death.
