"Yes, I would go back if they asked me. My stance always is I would love to come back. In fact, they have trashed John so fucking much on that show that I would like to come back just to set the record straight the real way, I’m not that bad of a dad. I saved my kids. I went to hell to save my kids. How bad can I be, people? But there are a couple ( Read more... )

Hey there! gatekeeper1324 March 3 2012, 18:58:22 UTC
I love JDM and John Winchester I think out of both Mary and John, that Mary was worst as she led not only John but her children into a life of hunting she should have known better. That is why they can never give up hunting it doesn't work we have seen that with; Mary, Sam, John and Dean, all of them went through it. I would love JDM going back on the show so he can set things right for John Winchester. He loved his sons he was strict because he had to be or else they'd all be dead.

Toady in town I saw a guy who was like a young JDM I was so busy oggling him I nearly fell over the curb, yup he saw it 'hides head in shame.'

ED.

I would love for JDM to be back on the show, even for an episode and I hear you on how he's portrayed on certain fic, but then subtlety and a light hand are not skills everybody possesses. I definitely don't agree with JDM that John's been trashed in the show. I've always found John an interesting character since season 1, but man, there's no retcon going on with his character. I mean what could it be worse than what we saw in Something Wicked?

No, definitely no retcon. I think it's more a matter of....idk...shifting focus? I feel like his character *has* been treated differently ever since S3, but it's not like the new info clashes with what we knew before that. Or something. ^^

Well, you know I have to put in my two cents. I'm not so sure Show has totally trashed John, but I am one of those folks who have watched from the pilot. Day one. Season 1 and 2 John is how I see him. Tough, hard ass, pain in the ass, over protective, controlling and a shit sometimes. But never abusive in anyway. That includes physical or psychological abuse. Manipulative? Yes. Opportunistic? Yes ( ... )

And now I don't have to type my own comment because you just said it all for me! [seconds your comment with hearty agreement!]

*totally on-board for a John flashback though...so long as he's portrayed as a complex three dimensional character, not a caricature*

*shakes your hand*

Oh, I would love a John flashback. Ghost John. John anywhere, as long as they don't demonize him.

....I vaguely remember drunkenly giggling at the a lot of people do and that doesn't mean they are alcoholics. line last night. So, uhm...yeah. Point taken.

Okay, aaaaanyway. This: I am one of those folks who have watched from the pilot. Day one. Season 1 and 2 John is how I see him. supports my running theory that it all depends on how much time you spent with the guy before show decided to throw ambiguity out the window. For you it clashed with the picture of 'your' John that you'd been building up for two years, for me it was basically new info on a character I'd only known for a little over a week ( ... )

I'm firmly in the shades-of-grey camp, myself. I love John's character, and believe absolutely that, had there not been evil forces at play, he would have been an awesome father. Heck, Show pretty much gave us that on a platter in S5 when we got young!John, so appalled at the stories he heard about the man he didn't know was himself ( ... )

I agree with the Adam thing big time. Everyone can piss and moan about about how Sam and Dean didn't have a "regular" childhood. But Sam and Dean survived (well except for when they didn't) :) but poor Adam barely made it out of young adulthood. I do disagree with the percentages. I would say that fear was a huge percentage but it was a fear based on the fact that he could and would lose his boys - and he loved them far too much for that. So he became the John we all know and love? Well, I know and love. *grins*

I agree with hard-assed, tormented, manipulative and controlling. I think they were the exact words I used except I forgot tormented!

Enh, I pulled the percentages out of my ass to make a point. ;)

Point taken! And if you think about it, maybe it was love and fear in equal measure.

I see him as a driven man who loved his children, but his fear overrode the normal ways of showing that love. I see a man who made a lot of mistakes and some of those mistakes manifested later on within those children and their reactions to the world around him. He was not perfect, he was not father of the year for sure - but he did love his kids. I just think sometimes his way of showing that love was not the best, his affection tainted with fear and obsession. It's a hard balancing beam, I'll admit - but then, the show layered all of that in Season One. I don't think they ruined his character, I actually think his is the most accurate and less messed with as time has gone on. But complicated, a mess, lovable and enough to piss you off in one go - that's John Winchester. Kinda like him that way...

*HUGS*
