Hope everyone had a very happy new year!
My new year went thus:
We'd originally planned to go see a burlesque show, my 2 best friends and our husbands/partners.... but that plan got scrapped because baby sitting was hard to get (For us not a problem, Mum and Dad live like 10 mins away and always happy to have her stay). So the plan was changed to a night at one of my friend's house.....
There were 8 adults and 8 kids, and we walked down to the local fish and chip shop, and got dinner for our tribes, and walked to the school to go eat and let the kids play. Then back home the kids played outside for a bit while us adults played the Wii and started on the alcohol.
I'm not much of a drinker (and hubby doesn't drink at all), and my uncle keeps buying us alcohol for Xmas.... so we had champagne to use up, and I agreed to try a drink with champagne and angostura bitters on a sugar cube, with a strawberry :) I don't really like champagne (ok, I don't actually like it, or any white wine at all)... but this was ok... but one small glass was more than enough :) One of my friends is pregnant, so she had one small glass of bubbly too, and then had nothing else to drink... and hubby doesn't drink at all... so there were 3 of us non/slight drinkers and 5 drinkers.
Kids then in bed (asleep or watching a movie) and we played more Wii, then started up a game of poker. Only half of us were actually interested in poker, and we were playing with chips and more complicated rules than some of us were used to, so we did one practice round. Then one round when I had a 10 and there were 2 10s on the table... which I knew was 3 of a kind, so was something, but I keep forgetting what cards beat what.... I figured it wasn't very good....but I figured the sooner I lost my chips the sooner I could get out of the game and do something else, so I kept betting with everyone else (normally I'm a too cautious person to really get into things like poker, even if it's only plastic discs instead of actual money)..... I even made a comment when raising at one point (we'd gone pretty high, we'd got to betting $1000 chips) that I didn't care, the sooner I lost my chips, the sooner I could go play Wii :) but, lo and behold.... it got down to only 3 of us, and I ended up winning!
But then the game dissolved into sillyness, when the drinkers had consumed much alcoholic beverages, and became incapable of playing properly and remembering whose turn it was... so I decided it was time to put on some nachos - figuring food might help. We had hubby set his watch alarm to 11:55, so we could have time to get ready for New Year. We got the beeps as we were serving... but the nachos were scarfed in no time, and we grabbed our poppers and sparklers and headed out the front onto the street to be annoying :) So we did all that drunken merriment.... running up and down the street with sparklers shouting Happy New Year while someone fairly close by had fireworks (we couldn't see them, just hear them). A beautiful dog came wandering up... obviously owned (collar and obeyed "sit"), but had no tags.... he just sat down and stayed with us as we were standing around chatting.... with the host doing the "I luv youse all" speeches about how great friends we are, while wearing the popper box as a hat :)
We eventually wandered inside again, followed by the dog. The Host's partner tried to usher the dog out the back to keep him safe, but the dog didn't want to (they have a dog)... so it was let back out the front, and hopefully it found its way home safely.
There was the usual (LOUD) grabbing the phone and drunkedly ringing everyone you know to wish them a happy new year.... until the host asked me to take her phone away because she shouldn't call any more people... so we hid it in the pantry.
So back to playing Wii.. and more drinking for the drinkers... one of the friend's partners made me a nice weak (with milk) "cowboy" - when the others were drinking them straight... which I appreciated, because he was concerned that I had it to my liking - not trying to put more alcohol in like I know some people would have.
My pregnant friend and I were sitting at the table laughing at all the drunk people - who were quite entertaining ;) Her husband had come over and started chatting to us, most of which we couldn't understand at all due to slurring.... which sent us into fits of laughter.... He said to me I was "solid" I think at one point.... meaning it as a "solid friend" type thing, but I'd gone "what?" (because I hadn't heard him, I thought he'd started saying something and stopped art way through), and he thought I'd got offended (since I am solidly built) :) I got called over the couch and I've replied that if I moved and let go of the chair I was holding, he would fall over (which I think was actually true).
MiniObsi had come out, not wanting to sleep and wanting to go home, and I managed to (after much effort) persuade her to go back to bed, because it wasn't a kid friendly celebration.... We were kinda partied out but waiting for the right time to say our goodbyes...
I'm not really into the whole drunken party thing to be honest. I don't drink much because I can't see the point.... I'll have the occasional red wine, or something if we go out (and if I'm not driving).... I just figure it's more expensive (I'd rather spend $30 on a nice meal I can enjoy, rather than on alcohol I'll later spew up and leaves me feeling crap) and I'm not interested in getting drunk..... and I don't see the point of things like vodka drinks where the alcohol doesn't really add any flavour to the drink... Hubby feels the same. But where I'll have the odd glass of red wine, or a midori or baileys because I like the taste.. he won't have any (the occasional sip to taste what it tastes like, but nothing more). We're used to being the only people who don't drink at parties.... when we have family get togethers with his family, we're normally the only two not drinking (They will even have wine with a small family dinner).. anyway....
Then the night got more "interesting". 2 people were quite drunk, giggling like teenagers :) We started playing mariokart, and then one of the guys collapsed back on the couch and started drooling copiously. Concerned that he'd choke, we leaned him forward. We had to hold his head because he was completely out of it. Then he started vomiting :(
Never feed a man singapore noodles and then give him a bottle and a half of vodka and a couple of beers.... it does not make for a pretty sight.....
So hubby and I did the dutiful friend thing. me holding his head up so he could puke into a towel "bucket" his wife and hubby had made with a towel we'd managed to grab.... His wife and I are standing there fighting back vomiting ourselves.. I eventually had to go away.... and went to locate more towels and a bucket. There was much vomiting....
That's when the next door neighbour came over... and everyone but hubby, myself and the puking guy's wife went off next door. Lucky we were there... if we'd have gone home when MiniObsi was begging us to, I think she'd have been there on her own with him...
At one point he came to enough to say he needed to pee.... so we had the decision to make of how to get him to somewhere to pee.... I suggested outside, since it was easier to get there (doors off the loungeroom where we were) and wouldn't matter if he vomited there.... so I cleared a path to the door, while the host woke up her partner (who had to work the next day so had gone to bed at a semi respectable time) to assist moving him.... so hubby, his wife and the host's partner were all there basically carrying him outside and holding him up so he could pee (which included taking his pants down LOL). After standing there a while, and nothing happening, they brought him inside, and decided to lay him on the floor on a wooden section (opposed to the carpet he was on before), and put a towel under his head.
Then someone mentioned should we take him to hospital... He was virtually unconscious, with the occasional conscious moment when he apologised and told his wife he loved her :) A friend had been taken to hospital before for alcoholic poisoning, so she was concerned.... and he's a big guy, so it was difficult to move him around....I figured that they have ambulance cover so it wouldn't cost them anything, and it was better to err on the side of caution..... particularly since I've never seen anyone get drunk to the point of unconsciousness.... sleepyness yes, not actual passing out and not being able to be roused....
So I called the ambulance.... the woman on the phone asked me if he was violent or threatening to kill himself, or if he had a weapon... and I'm like "no....he can't even hold his head up, and he's virtually unconscious on the floor...." They took about 15-20 mins to arrive I think..... I'd cleared a path to the front door incase they needed to get him out, and the host and I waited out the front. She had sobered up considerably... not surprising :)
So they arrived and checked him out.... he was by now a little more conscious, and was able to actually talk to the ambos....(3 word conversations - a vast improvement) they basically said to just keep him on his side like we had been and not to give him anything until he passed the vomiting stage. We apologised for wasting their time, and wished them a happy new year :)
After that, the party sort of crashed :) we played a little more Wii to chill out a bit, and the host's partner took 2 friends home and then went back to bed... and we left shortly after... it was almost 4am by this time.
So... that was our exciting new Years eve :) Normally we just stay at home and watch the fireworks on TV :)
-- BTW yes, as you can see I've not fallen off the face of the earth.... :) I plan to do a catch up post shortly.
