What was the first song you ever heard by 6? [Sufjan Stevens}
Hmmm, I believe it was
The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us! It was on the mix I recieved for GAMT 2.0. (The second mix trade run by
audiography) I didn't much care for it at first, but I came to my senses very quickly.
What is your favorite song of 8? [Faker]
It would have to be
Hurrican. All out rocking fun, and impossable not to sing along to. It's also my favorite use of 'la la la's' in a rock song. Maybe even any song.
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life? [The Beatles]
They were the band that made me love music. Before The Beatles I was listening to whatever the radio told me was good. I didn't really like the music, but I listened to it so I could "fit in." Then, when kis teased me about liking them, I found that I didn't care. I preferred the music over their acceptance. And I still do.
What is your favorite lyric off 5? [Rufus Wainwright]
No it will not be me
Rufus the Baptist I be
No I won't be the one
Baptized in cum
What will happen instead
Someone will demand my head
And then I will kneel down
And give it to them looking down
-From
Gay Messiah Because I love Rufus the most when his pretty tongue is firmly in his pretty cheek.
How many times have you seen 4 live? [The White Stripes]
Once, at last years Big Day Out festival. It was, with the exception of The Mountain Goats this year, the best live set I've ever seen. Jack White is an amazing musician, he swapped effortlessly and seemlessly between instruments, from piano to guitar to crazy xylophone thing and back to guitar... Also, the White Stripes go on stage without a setlist. Jack just plays whatever he feels is right, often swapping songs mid-song. When people bag Meg White's drum playing I point out the skill it must take for her to keep up with his crazy song swapping ways.
You've Got Her In Your Pocket (live) What is your favorite song by 7? [David Bowie]
Ummmmm, that's a hard one. A really hard one. Ok, I'm gonna say it's either
Life on Mars (love the chorus) or
Quicksand (love the lyrics and the melody) or
The Man Who Sold the World (love, love, love that guitar).
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad? [John Lennon]
Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy). Written just months before his death, a song for his son. "I can hardly wait to see you come of age, but I guess we'll both just have to be patient." I can barely listen this song, it makes me so sad.
What is your favorite song by 9? [John Vanderslice]
Fiend in a Cloud (part two), which wasn't written by hm but rather is his reworking on a Blake poem. I love the way his voice comes in alone, and then he strings... And then the echoey bit at the end. Awesome stuff. I prefer this album closer over the fuller 'Fiend In A Cloud' that opens the album.
When did you first get into 2? [The Mountain Goats]
Well, I remember ovr a year ago now someone on
audiography posted "Lion's Teeth." I wasn't going to download it, because I thought it was a novelty song, but then there were all this comments saying "mountain goats! awesome!" So I did. I listened to the song for the first time on the bus home from uni, and I was... I don't know what the word is. I thought the song was interesting, but it was so outside what I was used to that I put it aside.
Then, months and months later, I had a nasty assignment to finish. I promised myself that if I finished it I would go out and buy a cd, one by a band I knew barely anything about. I finished the assignment, and went to the cd shop, and "Tallahasse" caught my eye. I posted to
audiography raving about the album, and
purple_bottle uploaded
Going to Georgia for me. Listening to that song was like being hit by a truck. Repeatedly. Clearly, from that point there was no looking back.
Oh, and for the record, I now love "Lion's Teeth."
How did you get into 3? [John Lennon]
As I mentioned above, I loved The Beatles. Bought the best of Paul McCartney and Wings and was not impressed. I vowed to stay away from solo Beatle efforts. Then I saw the best of John Lennon on sale and forgot my vow. Never before have I been so glad to have broken a vow. I would say that I love Lennon's solo work more than The Beatles now. Certaintly, my tatoo is of him alone, and not of all four of them. I just love the personal nature of his music, the raw pain and often self loathing that he makes no effort to hide. Like
Stranger's Room a demo recorded whilst he and Yoko were on their infamous break. Gah.
What is your favorite song by 4? [The White Stripes]
I have two.
Forever for Her (Is Over For Me). I love the way it builds, and the melody, and Jack's voice, and the lyrics and just everything about it really. And
Hotel Yorba. It's just an amazing little song. And awesome to sing along to. People say Meg can't drum, but I have a soft spot for her drumming, in this song especially.
How many times have you seen 9 live... [John Vanderslice]
Only the one time, when he opened for the Mountain Goats at the start of the year, and later joined them on stage. It was just him and an accoustic guitar, which was a real contrast to the instrument heavy Vanderslice that appears on the albums. But it worked, and it was awesome.
What is a good memory concerning 2? [The Mountain Goats]
The first time I listened to Get Lonely, and actualy "got" it. That might not make sense to some of you, but I know other tmg fans will know what I'm talking about.
Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad? [Faker]
You know what? There isn't.
What is your favorite song off 1? [The Beatles]
Hahahaha. Oh, you're serious? Well,
Strawberry Fields Forever is my favourite song of all time. So let's just leave it at that. Else I'll find myself uploading nearly every Beatles song I have.
How did you become a fan of 10? [Hawksley Workman]
Haha, the same way I became a fan of Sufjan. GAMT. 2.0. It was the very same mix, as well. (That was one awesome mix, by the way. I don't thn the girl who made it posts anymore, which is a shame.) The song was
Your Beauty Must Be Rubbing Off, which is still one of my favourite songs by him. It's completely unlike any other song I have ever heard, and I love it.
