I always find the white ones to be worse :/ But often, too, I think it is related to the freshness of the onion!

They say if you remove the heart of the onion, then chopping won't be so bad. Or sticking them in the freezer or fridge for a bit I find really works - when they are cold, I don't seam to mind as much.

I've teared up form onions before, but I haven't noticed any difference from red to white, it seems to depend on the particular onion.

If you cut onions under water you're fine because the onion juice can't mist into the air and irratate your eyes...
Also I would guess that you weren't wearing contacts when you were cutting said onions, and in the past you HAVE been wearing contacts when you cut them. If you've got in your contacts the onion juice can't get right into the sensitive part of your eyes... Or that's what my mama told me... I do notice that if I have my contacts in onions don't bother me, but when I don't my eyes will start to sting...
Only on a few occasions have I had onion so fresh that I'm literally tearing from it
