Maybe I'm cheap, or just plain mean, but I don't spend a lot of money on gifts for people I don't know. I bake something or make one of those cookie-in-a-jar or soup-mix-in-a-jar type things, or I buy something cheap. I spend more on my family and the people in my life that I'm close to.

For instance, one of my friends from High school just got married this summer, and I was invited to the bridal shower and the stag/doe but ended up not going because I wasn't invited to the wedding or the reception - it seemed more like they wanted my gifts and money than my presence at their "special moment". I sent a really sweet card instead.
