Miscellany

For anyone who doesn't already know, I can no longer live in the apartment with my sister because they don't allow undergraduate students to live there. Because of that, I'm going to be living at home next year instead, which will be totally fine but quite different. I've also applied to work as a warehouse worker for Target, and am going in for ( Read more... )

Target! That might work out wonderfully for you, sir. Lemme know how it works out.

In any case, I'll recommend stuff.
1. I don't think you've seen Stray Dog yet, but if you haven't, check it out. It wasn't conventional Kurosawa, but it was a refreshing look at Toshiro Mifune (looking like a modern human for once!) and a chance to see Takashi Shimura's incredible chameleon-like abilities at work again. I swear Shimura has a completely different vibe in every role; I'm tempted to call him the greatest actor ever. (If you've seen that, why not watch The Life Aquatic? I thought it was plain strange at first, but it's endearing in a quirky and delightful way. Kind of like Hendrix.)

2. Reading is something I intend to do, but never really get around to. I was on a bit of a streak last semester where I devoured three or four books in a couple weeks, though! If you're up for some philosophical exploration, you can't go wrong with Hardcore Zen by Brad Warner. I wouldn't hesitate to say it has changed my life, though I need to read it ( ... )

The Life Aquatic was delightfully strange. Who the hell was Ned anyway?

If a woodchuck could chuck wood, then I would kill myself.

A. Recommendations:
-->1. "Batman Begins." Although you've probably seen it already.
-->2. William Faulkner: Light in August.
-->3. Less Than Jake: "Bridge and Tunnel Authority" and "The Science of Selling Yourself Short."
These are really just things that I myself like, not things that I think you yourself would necessarily like as well. When one is known almost exclusively through LJ, recommendations to one are bound to be of such a nature.

B. Requestions:
-->1. Describe and name your ultimate anime-style special attack.
-->2. What one thing do you want to do, accomplish, or experience before you die?
-->3. What's the best sci-fi novel you've ever read?

1. This is a command, not a question but ok... my ultimate special attack would be sticking my flying v guitar up someone's ass.
2. Before I die, I want to create something that I'm extremely proud of, either in writing, film, music, or some other media that I'm not even thinking about right now. Basically something that leaves proof and validation for my existence.
3. This is difficult because I don't really read much sci-fi. How about William Gibson's Neuromancer? I almost finished it once... :P

I know what you mean about the create-something-artistically-awesome-for-them-to-remember-you-by. I feel the same way, but I'm fairly certain it'll be either novels or poetry that I leave behind for future generations.
If you would like a replacement question for #3, you can recommend an extremely funny novel to me. and the first I shall retroactively phrase as,
"What would be your ultimate anime-style special attack, and what would it be called?"

For a funny novel... you should read that pirate book that Alec got for our Dad. I have no idea what the name of it is, but he would know what I'm talking about.
