I think I qualify to answer this question, since I have THREE diaper bags! LOL! I first used a Petunia Pickle Bottom back the boxy one and it was great for the first 6 mo or so when I carried everything but the kitchen sink. For quick trips and for when I didn't have to carry to much with me, I used the Fleurville Sling Tote which is awesome. Perfect size. I haven't used the PPP one for a while, since it's really big. And then I bought a much smaller messenger tote (Kate Spade) from Nordstrom (on sale) that I used for a few weeks but then it got bored of that bag (I should really unload it...). Now that I really don't need to carry much with me, I just throw in a few diapers and wipes (in one of those Diapees and Wipees cases) in my Louis Vuitton (the new one I got recently, which is big) with a bag of goldfish and a sippy cup and we're good to go. I usually keep a change of clothes for him in my car but I don't carry it around. Hope that helps!

I *Love* my Petunia boxy backpack. I wear it as a backpack 90% of the time and it is SO convenient that way (especially now that C is bigger and I have to hold her a lot). My only complaint is that it's a little difficult to organize things inside, but if you put stuff into ziploc bags then you have instant organization.

Agree that the Petunia Picklebottom backpack style bags are great....you can wear it as a tote now, but I carry Anya a lot and end up using it as a backpack. I personally seem to have to carry a lot of stuff, but I think that is partly due to being in the city and wanting to be out for a half day (and often not near a car to stow emergency change of clothes, things like that). You'll figure out whether you personally can travel with less.

I also like the Skip Hop messenger bags. Much more husband friendly but a little less "girly" than the others.
