5. Now might be the time to get close. I have students in this situation. What is often shocking is that those closest to them often evaporate in a weird survivor-guilt/embarrassment response. You would think, for example, that the paternal family would be desperate to hang on to contact, but no, not necessarily.
I'm wondering myself how that is all going to work out. She's fortunate in that she's geographically close to her blood family and they've always been quite closely knit, as well. So I'm hopeful that even should her inlaws fail her, her other family will be there for her.

re #1, i often also get winter-weary by now. this year, there've been enough warm breaks that it doesn't seem to be affecting me as much. i think we've not gone two weeks without at least a couple of days of at least -5C if not warmer (and today it's allegedly getting up to -4). that being said, i get it.
re #2, i've bussed by a couple of times recently - it's hard to see much change from the street at this point. i'm looking forward to seeing the finished product, but not as much as you are, i'm sure :-)
