Michiru was vaguely aware her mother had had another sister. Once her grandmother had made a reference to a “she” running off with “that man” while still a teenager. In the oldest family photos for the whole clan there were five daughters instead of four if you actually counted. Like anything that did not meet the family’s exacting standards it was not spoken of.
Haruka’s mother liked to bitch about her mother but unlike her father’s parents that side of the family evidentially could not be hit up into “loaning” money so Haruka never met any of them. Really, with an older brother and a cousin in the yakuza, three younger sisters, a younger brother, three other cousins, and ten second cousins in her age group she felt no loss from a missing side of the family.
Even if they hadn’t had their own independent means by the time they started investigating Mugen Academy, neither felt the great need to bring their lover home to their family. Not that she thought her crass, but Michiru felt no need to subject Haruka to her family’s artificialness and standards of perfection. Not that she thought she was delicate, but Haruka didn’t think Michiru needed to be thrown in the middle of her boisterous, drinking, smoking, and brawling family.
Each of them couldn’t remember exactly but just assumed she had been the one to set up their bank accounts’ security questions to her mother’s maiden name.
