The soon-to-be-Dr. Mizuno was a brilliant, brilliant medical student. Brilliant, brilliant in general really. It was lack of experience in ever living alone that had her foundering since she had been thrown out of her parents’ house.
Most of the floor of the closet-like Tokyo apartment was taken up by a bed, Ami’s crib, and piles of clothes and medical textbooks. The biggest space held a rapidly molding towel with laundry dripping down onto it from the twine clothesline crossing the room at shoulder level. She already had one shirt hanging out the fifth floor window and was wondering how much more she could fit there.
The baby was crying for more food, a new diaper, something. She was just wondering if she could wash the baby in one of the communal sinks, since all the buckets in the communal baths were too cracked to hold water.
“Shh, don’t cry,” she reassured the illegitimate child she had given birth too. “We’re going to be alright.”
