Title: The Memory Lingers, I Should Be Doing Something Else
Author: purplekitte
Theme: Outer Senshi--Shame
Genre: Angst
Version: Manga
Rating: PG

“Something’s wrong,” little Hotaru said, staring out the window at the red in the sunset and the gold harvest moon. It shouldn’t have been foreboding.

“Get down from there.”

“Yes, Haruka-papa. But I’m not playing games with my imaginary friends.”

“She didn’t say you were. Now go to your room to get ready for bed; it’s bedtime,” Michiru-mama told her.

Hotaru changed into her pajamas obediently enough, the black and purple ones instead of her usual Hello Kitty ones because they felt right today. She crept back to outside the kitchen stealthily, knowing instinctively there would be things worth overhearing if she was quiet.

“What’s wrong out there?” Haruka-papa growled as to not be overheard in Hotaru’s room. A pot clanged.

“Those months of our lives we lost, whatever’s going on out there, they must be related.

“I’ve been trying to remember,” Setsuna-mama said. “But all I can remember is death. But that’s absurd. If we’d died we wouldn’t be here to remember it.”

“Or not remember it.” But Michiru-mama agreed, Hotaru could hear.

“But what can we do? We’re just normal people with no idea what’s going on. I don’t want any of you to get hurt!”

Hotaru couldn’t help it, she sneezed. Her parents went silent so she walked right into the kitchen. “I’m ready for bed. Could Michiru-mama tell me a story?”

She told a fanciful story of a cyborg girl and a mad scientist. Hotaru waited till she had gone to climb out her window.
