Astara had been seeing Gerstav the kitchen boy and thought he might want to marry her. Her hand slipped as she said it, creating an imperfection in the weave that she had to unravel, so she was probably being serious.

The young girl with a needle nearby smiled but her face fell as the familiar figure of a nurse approached her. “Just a little longer, please?” she whispered.

“Good as it is that you are diligent at at least one of your studies it is not proper for Your Highness to spend her days callusing her fingers and gossiping. What do you so see in this work?”

How could she explain that when she sat in the fabric room she felt like anyone else? Sure, the lower servants spun thread and weaved fabric and her mother’s maids sewed and she was only permitted to embroider on silk and velvet, but everyone ignored her like she wasn’t there instead of going silent when she passed. Listening to gossip made her feel like an adult in the company of adults instead of a child with no other children to play with.

And she liked embroidering complicated and difficult patterns. Creating beautiful things was not otherwise a major component of a Plutonian Princess’s education. She watched others’ work and thought she had some better ideas for patterns if anyone would just let her try.

“Just a little more,” she said again, showing an almost complete image of an imported Neptunian rose of surpassing beauty.

Her maid stared at the light blue thread on the dark blue velvet and didn’t answer immediately, which meant she was being swayed. “Only until you finish that, no starting new ones.”

“Thank you,” the Princess said before resuming her work at a snail’s pace.
