The presence of voices seeped in to him slowly, though a solid should have conducted sound better than gas. Or so she’d tell him later anyway.
“You’ll set him on fire at that rate. Do you want to kill him? Well, never mind, of course you do, but none of this would be worth this effort then.”
“Since we’ve come this far. So, let him thaw out on his own. Help me put buckets down then so I don’t have to mop up all the melt water later.”
That put upon voice, he knew it. It was her, that demon girl from the temple where he had worked. Jadeite’s more recent memory caught up. She was Sailor Mars.
“How long is this going to take? Even I remember from titration and melting curves in school that even if I add heat the ice will stay at zero degrees until it’s melted.”
“I leave fire to you, you leave water to me.” That one was Sailor Mercury. He was waking up, thinking quicker now.
“Does magic ice even work like water ice?”
He could hear a slow drip turn into a torrent that sounded like a shower. His eyes opened, too bright, closed, blinked, and then closed again.
“He’s waking up.”
The burn of light was only the beginning of feeling returning to his body. Part of him was warm but most of him was lying very uncomfortably in a puddle of tepid water. He forced his eyes to slit open and saw a short-haired girl haloed by the offending light.
“Hello? Can you hear me?”
“If you want to avenge Beryl or Metallia get it out of your system now.”
“Stop it. Anyway, they’re all long gone though it looks like you don’t have much reason to be loyal to them.”
“Seeing the big block of ice we found you in.”
“We would like it very much if you would help us.”
“No need to be so nice to this slime ball.”
“Shh.” The girl Sailor Mercury reached over to press fingers to his neck and wrist. They were warm and he’d later remember falling in love just then. “Can you hear me?” she repeated, before pinching him hard between neck and shoulder, awakening him to the world with a yowl.
