Once upon a time there was a girl who was afraid of the dark.

Once she’d had a mother and a father to turn off the lights for her, but not anymore. Now she had to turn them out herself and then run to bed and throw the covers over her head before the monsters could emerge and get to her from their daytime hiding places.

There were many monsters in her room, wolves under the bed that could stretch long and sinuous as snakes, spiders on the ceiling, blobby tentacled things in the closet. She shivered with her covers over her head, where it was safe, until the sun came in through the window.

One night the girl, who was becoming a young woman, decided to do something about it. She said to the youngest of the clan of wolves wasn’t it troublesome they had to share her with the other monsters? The next few nights everyone was too busy among themselves to terrorize her. The wolves slowly drove the others from their territory and maybe she helped, because it was her room after all.

When only the strong and ambitious wolves remained, she sat one night with a flashlight in her otherwise dark room.

“I want to make a deal with you. You keep the other monsters from me and I’ll be yours alone. But it’s a lot of trouble with you snapping at me and not catching me much. How about an agreement? Free reign to do whatever you want but only at certain times.”

So began a series of strange superstitions of things to avoid. Don’t put on socks while not already wearing a skirt. Don’t step on every fifth step on the stairs. Don’t whistle between six at night and six in the morning. Don’t let the pickles touch the mayonnaise.

These were wolves, not dogs, so they were careful to remind the young woman that they were not tame, not her friends, but as time went on the snapping became more and more for show.

The wolves, her wolves, would protect her, their Makoto, from all the other monsters in her mind. That was before she met real monsters.
