sm_monthly 5-1-10 theme

So I was rereading Silmarillion when the new theme was announced. This was going to be "inspired by" rather than "crossover," but then, after writing an abridged version of one of the boringer chapters ("Of Beleriand and Its Realms"), I found myself too lazy to derive some new place names from Elvish roots, so I just used the map on page 139 and bull-shitted all my geographic inaccuracies. Yeah.

Meanwhile, one of the things I like about Tolkien's epic, old-times style of prose which I try and fail to imitate is the ability of use the word "love" whenever and between whoever you want and not worry about OMG slashy implications. (Though if they start going on for long enough about how their love for each other is greater than any love of women, eventually it hits the point where "homosocial bond" is just something my Texan English teacher made up, Gilgamesh.)

In those days of the siege, when Metallia cowered in her caves, though she made many things of iron and dark magic which they knew of not, the house of Apollo was scattered around the Mountains of Terror to contain her.

In the north, Zoisite dwelt in Dorthonion. His people were few, for the land was cold and desolate, but lithe and swift and little they did not see that happened in their land. They were archers of renown and many an Orc fell to their arrows without seeing the figure clad in raiments of snow that was their doom.

In the west, Nephrite kept ever a watch upon the waters. But Metallia’s servants never built ships or sailed except at greatest need, save Thetis her steward, and no ships came in this time from the Uttermost West. He dwelt in the Vinyamar, in Neurast by the coast.

In the east, Jadeite dwelt in strong halls in Himring in the Land of Himlod on the Gelian. Through there came the bulk of the peoples from beyond the Blue Mountains, the Aftercomers or the Stunted. Many of them settled in this land, under their own kings, though it was ever the case that many of their young men served in the armies of the lords from across the sea. A rich land it was, while the siege lasted.

In the south, Kunzite’s people kept no permanent dwelling, in the desert that stretched from the Aros River to the Nan Dungortheb, where the great devourer had once hidden herself. They were a hardly people, accustomed to the heat of the sun, though they loved the stars more, as all their people. They were lord of horses and ranged far after the glimmers and haunts from the forgotten south and the spiders who were ravenous, akin to the mother of spiders as they were.

The middle kingdom bore the brunt of the assaults from the north, but the people there were most numerous and valiant. In Nargothrond was the palace of Endymion, the son of the High King, but rarely did he stay in one place, being first in battle and last in retreat. His lands were between the Sirion and the sea and in that time the land had a watchful peace.

Now, a great love there was between Endymion and Kunzite in the days of yore, before the Oath and the Kinslaying. In that time, their doom was quiescent and they often hunted together in the forests of Brethil (which was afterwards the land of the People of Haleth). They spoke not of what had come before them, for there was no resentment, only forgiveness, between them.

Their doom still laid upon them, only delayed for a while. The shadow of the Oath remained in the hearts of the Shitennou, only sleeping for a time. They built up their armaments and made many promises of friendship among different houses and with the grey folk and those who came from across the mountains to the east and thought their peace would last and victory over Metallia within their power. But salvation could only come from the West, from the bright princess immortalized in song.

Such were the lands between the Blue Mountains and the Sea, in the days nigh the siege fell.
