Inspired by, well, the title, but man is it obvious that I was scribbling this during an environmental lecture about 'radiation and you.'

Mayor Serenity said they were fine, so they were fine as far as anyone in town was concerned. Under their radiation suits, the man had the patchy skin of a long-time hot-zone prospector, his wife was a real beauty, as was the other woman, probably one of their sisters, and the little girl was about the same age as the mayor and the doc’s girl.
So maybe by the next Strontium-90 fall they’d figured out that both of ‘em were Haruka’s women, but there were towns like that, where there were only a few men or a few women left compared to the other sex, as man-crazy Makoto was prone to complaining about their own town. And few enough people could have kids these days anyway.
So maybe by the next Cesium-137 fall they’d figured out that under all those lead-, plexiglass-, and concrete pellet-shielded clothes and gas mask, Good Ol’ Haruka was a woman too. The manliest woman they’d ever damn seen, but a woman. It wasn’t anything God was all that concerned about, Rei from the Church said, but then everyone knew her meetings with Minako from the cabaret hadn’t been about trying to reform her for a long time. There’d been an old preacher before the bomb fall that probably wouldn’t have approved, some of the old women said, but there was no one gonna gainsay Sister Rei now, not with her the only one who could predict when the wind was gonna shift besides.
Haruka was a good scavenger of old parts and Michiru the best piano player Minako’d ever had and Setsuna a fair tinker and Hotaru the best student Ami, the school marm, had ever had in her one-roomed schoolhouse. Certainly the mayor’s spoiled daughter wasn’t gonna let Hotaru leave her, and it wasn’t like there were any boys near her age, the old women would admit. So no one was terribly surprised that by next Iodine-131 fall they said they weren’t going nowhere.
