There was water now, where there had once been flowers. (In his head there was still an endless field of flowers.)
He could see their reflections in the water when he looked out of the corner of his eye. (He could still remember their arms around him.)
The wind brushed against his face and through his hair from the oft-broken roof. (In his memory it was Aeris’ feather-light kisses against his cheek, Zack’s hand ruffling his hair.)
For someone who had so little memory, he was awfully caught up in it. (The memories that weren’t real were his, the ones that were were of her.)
They sent him back every time her son killed him, just as she sent him back. (Zack and Aeris he had loved, but Sephiroth he had worshipped.)
(He lived in the past.) But now, quite to his surprise, he seemed to have a future.
“Dad! Dad! Look, I’m teaching Aeri to swim!”
“Don’t you dare drown your sister, Zackary!”
“I’m not! I’m teaching her.”
“Wasn’t Marlene supposed to be watching you?”
“Denzel came by and said Mom was looking for you and Marlene told us to come here since even though it’s always the last place Mom looks, it’s always where you are.”
“I will be having a word with your big sister Marlene.”
“Hello, Tifa,” Cloud said as she fished children out of the water.
“Daddy, Daddy! When I was down there, I saw flowers!” his daughter laughed delightedly.
(He saw them too.)
“Coming?” Tifa asked as she tried to herd cats… er, children.
(He could still smell the flowers and the mako.)
“Yeah.”
