Title: “Freedom”
Fandom: Hayate the Combat Butler
Characters: Hayate
Rating: PG
Spoilers: none
Word Count: 164

Hayate hated to be unhelpful, but there was a point where he had to take his life into his own two hands and those reliant on him had to stand on their own two feet.

Having hope felt stupid, like he should be curling up tighter into his own little world the instant he noticed himself doing it. What was the point of thinking beyond the moment when the future was so bleak? Having worked so hard to make himself unfeeling to the world, opening up and caring seemed like an invitation to the kind of pain that hurt the most.

But Hayate knew that if he wasn’t going to just sit down and die (and he wasn’t, he’d never considered giving up that way even before meeting Lady Nagi), he had to keep pushing forward, one moment at a time.

Or, at least keep things from getting worse. As he walked out of the courthouse, Ayasaki Hayate was legally emancipated from his parents.
