Grrrr... computers!

My computer keeps randomly rebooting. I checked the stats, and the CPU was running at 71 degrees C! Apparently it should be around 40. I've taken the case off and taken it out of its hidey hole and it's gone down to 57. That's still not great especially since I am definately not doing anything taxing these days! Colin got this special liquid stuff to put on his CPU. Thermal gel I think it was called. He was having a similar problem. You might want to try that!

Na... shouldn't only use thermal gel/grease on some CPU's, I forget the reason why.

Here's a good way to check if your heatsink is efficient enough... is it copper or aluminium colored? If you remove it and portions are like a blue-rainbow-grey (petrol-in-water color) then it's running too hot and a better heatsink+fan may be required.

Cool thanks, I'll check into that! (well, considering I'm afraid of touching my computer, I'll get a friend to help me check it out... hehe)

Nyaa... It could be thermal, but it could also be a power problem as well. If the PSU is putting out too much power, it will get hot. If the PSU is suddenly dropping a line, that will make it spontaneously reboot.

(PSU = Power Supply Unit, but you knew that right?)

Make sure the Heatsink+fan combo is secured to the CPU as well, as all it takes is a slight shift for it's effiency to go down.

Hi Brent,

Go ahead and add me to your friends list, I've added you to mine :)

I'd love to read the chapter you write for the contest, but it'll have to wait until I finish my two exams within the next two days... then I'll have more free time than I'll know what to do with! ;)
