Well I caught up on the various eJournals over the weekend and completely forgot to answer the four nice people to offered suggestions about my red sealing wax problem. Thanks to all of you

We got highly coloured crayon a 100% wool carpet a little while back. We used white spirit dabbed on, then rubbed/scrubbed out vigorously.

It worked, and didn't seem to damage the carpet.

I guess it depends on the fibre involved...
