Public! No Power in the 'Verse (Stargateland Challenge)

Oct 21, 2010 14:54

Uh-huh. This was totally random and weird, and kinda difficult, because I don't write much out of the Stargate fandom anymore. Ahem. So, excuse any random out-of-character concepts. x__x

Fandoms: Stargate Universe/Firefly
Characters: Adam Brody/Kaylee Frye, Dr. Nicholas Rush, Dr. Lisa Park
Rated: PG
Word Count: 1, 175
Summary: Yeah, I know. Weirdness alert. I thought Brody finally deserved to get some innocent love, and once I had the idea in my head, it wouldn't go away. Enjoy. (Kinda fluctuates between Brody/Kaylee pov at certain points when they're talking)

“I thought people drank out of depression, Mr. Brody?” As Dr. Rush said this, he downed another glass of Brody’s special still alcohol, warm happiness spreading through his body.

“Not when you had the coolest out of body experience ever, Dr. Rush,” Brody smiled as Rush snorted into his drink, spraying some of the liquid across the table of his quarters.

“Not likely,” Dr. Rush muttered dryly, putting his glass down for a re-fill.

“Just give it a chance - at least hear me out while you drink?” Brody paused the container above his glass, and when Rush nodded somewhat hesitantly, he poured him some more.

“You said it had to do with that round pedestal like object that seemingly had no purpose in that room that had no meaning?” Brody nodded at Rush’s question, and Rush shook his head, but listened.

“I know it didn’t do anything when we found it, but I checked it out later on before I turned in, and I swear, it was lit up. It was like it was saying ‘stand on me!’ and I just couldn’t help myself…and that’s when it happened,” Brody leaned across the table now, and Rush found himself interested, despite the fact that he didn’t believe a word the other man was saying - nothing wrong with scientific curiosity.

“The ‘verse happened,” Brody leaned backwards in his chair and closed his eyes, caught in a blissful reverie…

--

“That’s some strange story - maybe I can talk the Cap’n into lettin’ you in for free ‘till you can pay?” Kaylee Frye smiled politely across the engine room as she tinkered - Adam Brody had happened across Serenity while it was in port, the others were off doing a job according to her, so he was lucky to have found anyone at all.

“You’re an engineer, too?” Kaylee’s head shot up in surprise at his question, but she nodded.

“Want some help?” He smiled, and she didn’t detect a lie - so she nodded, keeping up her perky smile.

He slid under the engine with her and she found her breathing quicken slightly, she hadn’t ever had a guy down here, and she did tend to do things her own way, and he smelled kinda nice. It was all a tad distracting, and she wasn’t able to focus on much in the way of machines once he was down there with her.

“This is amazing - I’ve never seen work quite like this before, not even by some of the top guys back home,” he was muttering to himself and admiring a lot of her ‘quick-fixes’ which she had worried a guy like him might find unprofessional, but he seemed quite impressed.

“R-really?” Kaylee’s heart thumped.

--

“Was she better than Park?” Rush interrupted, slurring slightly as some drink spilled from his lips.

“Park’s not an engineer, man…” Brody cocked an eyebrow in Rush’s direction.

“Tha’s all the same…if she can help ush, you should have brought her with, Mr. Broshny.”

“Uh-huh, and risk her mental stability upon meeting you?”

“So, how were we lucky enough to get you back?”

“Well, since you asked…”

--

“You actually found one like it!?” Brody jumped up from the engine, nearly slipping on some grease in his bouncy anticipation.

“Ca’pn says it wasn’t that difficult to find when we searched the database - pretty fancy technology though,” Kaylee handed him a photograph of the pedestal and sure enough - he had a match, lit up and all.

“Huh…must be some kind of weird Ancient inter-dimensional transporter,” he mumbled to himself, wondering what else was on Destiny that they didn’t know about…

“Inter-dimensional!? Why not just…a few hundred thousand light-years? Ain’t this world somewhat like home?” Brody looked up and was surprised to see Kaylee’s eyes were wet. He scratched his head uncomfortably and set the photograph aside.

“This…isn’t my home Kaylee,” he said it as soft as possible, but it didn’t stop her from flinching.

“Can’t you just…be happy here…with me?” She sat next to him and put her head on his shoulder, not bothering to wait for his response. Brody sighed, reached over, and squeezed her hand.

“I guess a little longer…couldn’t hurt,” he managed to get his affirmation out before she tackled him into the hammock.

--

“I ain’t ever been this close with anyone, before,” her eyes were red, but her smile was genuine.

“There sure isn’t anyone back on Destiny like you, believe me,” Brody laughed slightly until he remembered how dire everything was on Destiny, and it hurt a little to remember reality - everything in this “verse” was so new, so different, and…it had Kaylee.

“Are you sure I can’t come with?” She didn’t bother to wait for his response, but wrapped her arms around him all the same - it was time to say goodbye, she knew.

“Believe me…you don’t want to come with,” he whispered, trying not to think of how Destiny or the people on board would affect her positive outlook.

“You don’t know me all that well, then…” she mumbled, a few tears squeezing out her eyes.

“I’m so happy I got the chance to-“ he started, but was interrupted by a loud, bored Scottish tone.

--

“I didn’t ask for a romance novel, Mr. Brody,” Rush rubbed his temples, wishing he had more alcohol for such a cheesy piece of literature.

“Aw, whatever. Out, out, out,” Brody snapped, annoyed that Rush had interrupted the part he was looking forward to getting to most.

“If you don’t have any more of this,” Rush motioned to the alcohol, “then I wouldn’t even hazard trying to stay - although I appreciate the entertainment,” he added in as an afterthought, an actual attempt to be nice (possibly because he was still tipsy) before stalking out of the room.

What he hadn’t seen when the bulkhead door opened was that Lisa Park was perched against the side of the door, being quite nosey, indeed.

“Want something?” Brody looked down at her and she jumped, having thought the door closed up after Dr. Rush ran out.

“Oh, um. Since you asked, how did you manage to get back home without any of noticing that you were gone?” Brody shrugged, much to Park’s dismay. She had been taking notes, too!

“It’s an inter-dimensional transporter - does it have to make sense?”

“Well…do you still have the specs, or the device itself?” Brody shook his head again, causing Park to huff loudly.

“What did you do with it!?”

“Airlocked it. Stuff like that - way too dangerous to have around,” Brody lightly guided the devastated Park to his door, in which he kindly showed her the way out.

After he was sure that she had left, he walked over to his bed and pulled out the device from underneath it and tapped the smooth cover, causing it to light up the room brightly. In messy handwriting it read ‘no power in the ‘verse can stop me from thinking about you, Adam. Stay safe!’

Smiling to himself, Brody realized happily that he finally knew what love felt like.
