Alright, look, I don't know what you heard, but they don't change the ending in a substantive way. They alter the exact nature of Ozymandias's tool for scaring the world into peace, to something a little less silly (and let's be honest, a giant psychic exploding squid is a little laughable), but as far as what it means for the world and for the characters, next to nothing is altered. They don't "change the ending." They change the details of one part of what brings about the ending, which in the end alters very little and damages nothing. Same ending, just for slightly different reasons.

They change the exact nature of Ozymandias' tool into something that is already being used symbolically to do something else.

That said, it's not a genius movie, nor do I entirely feel that they "get" all of the characters and all of the themes of the book, but it's not bad. It's worth seeing. They're a little incompetent here and there, but they don't deliberately fuck with anything substantial about the book.
