[On the northern wall of the barracks, someone has been scrawling. From time to time - in between fetching fresh supplies - she can still be found there, painting away. Pair after pair of small stick figures has been matched up, each with a symbol between them: hearts, diamonds, spades or clubs

Whoa.
That is a -lot- of scribbling. Painting. Whatever it is she's doing.
Riku slowly approaches the troll girl, taking in the entire mural as he does. His hood is down--so far nobody here has wanted to attack him on sight, so he figures he's likely safe--so it shouldn't be too difficult for Nepeta to know who she's talking to. Kind of.
After a moment of bemused staring, Riku finally speaks.]
Who all are these supposed to represent?

Human relationships are a little bit more complicated than that.
You don't just decide one day that you're in love. Some people might--some people believe in love at first sight. But it happens differently for everybody.
Maybe you're really good friends with someone--best friends, even. Over time that might change. And loving somebody as a friend is completely different than the type of love you're talking about. But they're both types of love.
[This is the weirdest conversation he's had since arriving at the keep. Period.]
Then there's the sort of love people talk about when it comes to families. I guess that one's more an obligation, but it still counts.
[...okay, he can't talk about it any more. Talking about love? Not exactly a comfortable subject.]

But still, she's skeptical. This all sounds very strange.]
Are you positive that the friendship emotion can become love?
[In troll society, friendship is a disease. She still can't really imagine it serving a reproductive purpose. Wouldn't that make inferior diseased larvae?]
Has it happened to you?

[But then she asks that second question. And Riku pretty much dies a little death on the spot.
How in he -worlds- is he supposed to respond to that? For one thing, he hasn't even told -Kairi-, so why should he tell Nepeta now? But at the same time, if he -doesn't- admit to it, he'll have to concede the point.
There's a long pause as Riku considers his options. Then, finally, he smirks slightly.]
Are you planning on putting it up on this wall if I give you an answer?

But the only way the silver-haired human will tell her who to ship him with is if she promises not to put him on this wall. That's perfectly obvious too.
So she won't.]
Not if it's a secret.

[Pause to make sure it sinks in.]
Yeah, maybe. I'm still figuring that out myself.
[But, uh. His expression is softer than it's been through their entire conversation--it's as close to a smile as he gets anymore, aside from when he's with Kairi.]

It's hard to know for sure. And nobody seems to understand.

That's right. That's one thing both sets of relationships seem to have in common.

This is stupid.
Nepeta visibly brightens.]
I'm Nepeta!
Reply
Nepeta, huh? I'm Riku.
