From Godel, Escher, Bach:

"At the turn of the century in Vienna, the Schonberg food factory stopped making tonic, and started making cereal instead. You can't imagine the uproar it caused."

Ahahahahahaha! So nerdyAlso, I think that's the first time I have seen it spelled Shonberg rather then Schoenberg. And yes I realize that I have left out all ( Read more... )

That's such a great book. Achilles and the Tortoise, the bad puns, the infallible math proofs, the unfathomable brain-teasers, unsolvable exercises, and irrepressible yet incomprehensible logic. That book makes me feel stupid in a way that only Townsend's Quantum Mechanics has before.

We must spread the Godel, Escher, Bach magic... you're only the third person I've come across who's ever even heard of it before, and that's counting myself.

Now I just need to go back and finish reading it.

I am in love with this book. Positively in love.

If I remember correctly Tania Cronin recommended it to me the semester I was taking Symbolic Logic, Geometry, and Form and Analysis. AMAZING semester to say the least.

*gasp* You mean you don't like vodka and cereal? Bah! What kind of Russky are you??

"The main reason being 'I don't want to.'"

I'll assume that's code for, "My time was so blissful, there aren't yet words in the English language that can convey my joy, so I have no choice but to wait."

...If so, that's quite the clever code.

I would like to give you a special hand-wrapped "WTF" in regards to your post title.

Oh, and you left the OSC book I was reading here, much to the irony of me finishing it before you left. I'll send it along as soon as I finish the book by that japanese "m" guy involving a bird.

The subject is also from the book - though really only funny in context. You'll just have to read it.

I'm excited about that bird book by that "m" guy. Wasn't there also a "w" somewhere in the title?

oh! i just learned this last week! when you can't type an umlaut, you add an e. so schönberg = schoenberg.

i was taught this lesson by an englishman studying in germany, when he told me a hilarious story that involved him needing to give a talk in münster but taking a train to munster (200 km away) instead.

anyway, i've been meaning to add you for awhile. i like your yellow skirt.

Ha! Thanks for the info. Thankfully my confusion with the whole Schoenberg thing didn't lead me quite that astray.

And thanks, I like the yellow skirt as well, though I guess technically it's a dress.

Yay for new friends!

I hit this page googling "happy horse apple happy"-- isn't that the original quote? That's crazy. Is there a Hofstadter connection somewhere?
