People use these journals to bitch, so I am going to bitch too.
I was talking to Resa the other day about Iraq, and she is concerned that the US will pull out as soon as a new President is voted in. Resa is an Iraqi woman living in the US now after her husband defected and gave the US several terrorist hideouts. She was once on Live Journal, as a friend to Cliff until told her he don't read the post often and it would be better to just e-mail him. Cliff won a metal for saving her husband and bringing him in alive. But I don't want to make this about Cliff so I will leave it there.
Her concern is common among most Iraqi people. They do not trust their government, its military, or its police force. As soon as the American's leave there will be another Hussain put in power within a few years. The general populous of Iran was hoping America would come to their aid too. But involvement in the middle east has only caused America more trouble than it can say grace over. (To coin a phrase Donna uses) First, the Arabs want America out and have pressured OPEC to raise oil to over a 120 dollars a barrel. The increase in oil has caused the cost of living to grow to high to do more than work for food. Houses are at an all time high of foreclosures, elderly on fixed incomes can't afford the medications they need to live. The average household has three full time jobs to just get by. Last year at this time a family of four paid $100 a week in groceries. Now it averages close to $250. The longer we stay there the worse it gets.
Last year a deranged (Korean) student went into a Virginia collage building and stared shooting up the students. 32 kids died. America fell to its knees and prayed, and demanded to know why, and took actions to see what can be done so this never happens again. People were in shock. Everyday in Iraq, some suicide bomber blows up an area killing at least 30 people. Their reaction is; "Why don't the Americans put a stop to this. They should bring more soldiers to patrol." Then they go about their business as if nothing changed.
Last year a car with four Iraqis in it refused to stop at a check point. The American soldiers fired in the air, then at the tires, then at the people in the vehicle. They killed all four of them. What happened? Why didn't the car stop when told to? Were the American soldiers wrong? Well the Sunni said the Americans killed four unarmed men. The Americans were told they couldn't shoot at the occupants of a vehicle for any reason, only at the tires, and give chase. The next day a Sunni suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives past a check point and killed 3 Americans and 12 Iraqi soldiers.
I have lost friends in Iraq. I worry everyday when Andrew is there. I want America out of there. Most Americans want out of there. Most Iraq want more Americans there. Europe is all up in the air about America wants to conquer the world and make it the American Empire. There are 30 billion people in America according to the last census, yet are military is less than a half a million people. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves. Altogether less than a half a million men and women. If we wanted to take over the world wouldn't we have at least 1% of the Population like England?, and Germany?, and Russia?, and etc... Every nation in the world says Americas military is the big kid on the block with the only contender being China. Hmmm, maybe we should do what we did in WW2 and start the draft agin, bringing every 18 to 21 men and women into the military, putting us at around 6 billion soldiers. Wouldn't that scare the hell out of everyone?
