1835 - A mentally ill man named Richard Lawrence attempts to assassinate President Andrew Jackson in the United States Capitol -- the first assassination attempt against a President. Both of Lawrence's pistols misfire, and Jackson proceeds to beat his would-be assassin with his cane.

1933 - Adolf Hitler is sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. (Ironic, that)

1969 - The Beatles' last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records in London. The impromptu concert is broken up by the police.

1941 - World War II: Attack On Pearl Harbor - The Imperial Japanese Navy attacks the U.S. Pacific Fleet and its defending Army Air Corps and Marine air forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

1987 - PSA Flight 1771 crashes near Paso Robles, California, killing all 43 on board, after a disgruntled passenger shoots his ex-boss on the flight, then shoots both pilots and himself.

1982 - In Texas, Charles Brooks, Jr. becomes the first person to be executed by lethal injection in the United States.

Hah, wow, mine's the 6th. There's nothing as cool in my birthday as Pearl Harbor (yours) or John Lennon's death (the 8th), though I do occasionally get Channukah.
