Great post.

It's described as the Copula, and as the Assertive verb in other grammar books.

Thank you. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response. This was a very difficult thing to untangle in my mind, though once I separated the two registers, I couldn't understand why it confuses me so much.

As to the naming of the verb; I was strongly tempted to call it the assertive or copula verb, but since I intended it as a supplement to MacLaren's Gaelic Self-Taught, I decided I should stick to their terminology.

Besides which, I can't find the Gaelic for the word "copula".

And I want to thank you again, your response led me to looking over the original again and I discovered several typos and mistakes (since corrected). (I hope.)
