I rather agree with the comments on the books. The fact that you know it's a childrens' book worsens the predictability issues as well--they tend to behave in certain ways. I'd frame the progression of the books as more of a steady increase in quality. The first two are really quite a pointless prologue to trudge through, but as soon as the story actually begins to have any directions, things get increasing better. It would have been nice to see how it would have turned out if a proper, cohesive storyline for the whole series had been framed beforehand and then realized.
