you could get a zipcar membership if you know how to drive.

Salem's probably got all their halloween stuff going on now

I've haven't been to Salem yet, i tend to forget it exists. But I have a feeling that this weekend it will still be full of tourists.

Getting away from Boston doesn't work when all of Boston follows you. :P

eh, it might be touristy, but it might still be really nice. i went last year the weekend before halloween weekend, and there are lots of fun museums, and candy apples and kettle cooked corn...while it might be a bit crowded, if you have nothing to do, it can be relaxing just to walk around and be amused.

also you could see if there are any apple farms still open. those are really nice (though having a car would be optimal for getting to one i guess)

someone mentioned going to/around wood's hole, and i've been there as well - quite nice and small town quaint.

you can take the early peter pan bus down to woods hole from south station (33 dollars roundtrip, 1.5 hours one way- it's not that bad) and then take the ferry over to martha's vineyard (14 dollars roundtrip- 45 min?) and then you can tour around there... or you can take the rail up to manchester by the sea. it's nice for swimming in the summer but i bet it's nice now too

I second this, I've done it multiple summers and loved it :) Buses in general are pretty useful if you don't mind the noise/bumpiness. Northampton is also a nice little town with cute restaurants and shops.

1. World's end. Theoretically accessible by train, requires some walking I believe. I think you can walk from Quincy? Look into it: http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/393_world_s_end.cfm

2. Crane Beach, Wildlife Refuge, and the surrounding area (there is a really tasty apple farm place). http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/295_crane_wildlife_refuge.cfm You can commuter rail to nearby, but unfortunately the shuttle bus to the wildlife area only runs in the summer.. I don't know what options there are right now, but its probably worth looking into.

3.Newport, RI. Commuter rail to Providence then take a shuttle-boat to Newport. Nature-y with rocky beaches and things. http://www.gonewport.com

totally leaning towards World's End... the new commuter line apparently has a stop within a mile and it opens on Oct 31st.

World's End is great; I went there by public transit (bus) a few weeks ago. Take the red line to Quincy Center, then the 220 to Hingham and walk (look it up on a map). Great place to lose yourself in - everyone who went really liked it. The Greenbush Line is closer ( ... )
