"Outcast", first book in the "tribe of one" series? I've dug it a bunch, and would rather not spoil the plot by telling you what all it reminds me of. I think you'd enjoy it. I'm on book 2, still enjoying it.
Old enough to be in used book stores. Looks like pima county library has other works from that author, but not this one, alas.
I suspect we have a predilection for the kind of literature the echoes the way we see the world which in turn influences the metaphors we use to understand & recapitulate the world. i.e. It's all hamsterwheels man.
I kind like the favorite author as shorthand for worldview; when I was a teen I was very heinlein, in my twenties is was more hunter s Thompson, 30/ was kinda joss whedon and now I'm arcing into ( damnit guy who wrote halting state)
Your relationship with your mother probably speaks more to your attitude towards love & women than your relationship with you ex-wife.
