Well, at first flush, I didn't like it. They kept in a bunch of stuff from PoA which I didn't like (talking on bridges, poor flitwick) and they still had the lack of detail that made the first HP full of wonder, and all the rest kind of poor without.
Things I did like:
- David Tennant. Rocks my world. I am *so* looking forward to him as the new Who. I did also see the Children in Need Who special yesterday with him in it as well, so I was definitely ready to see more of him.
- Dialogue. The dialogue was a lot more snarky this film out. The Weasley twins in particular were good.
- Matthew Lewis (Neville). I like the character, and I like the way Matthew is playing him.
- The 3 tasks. They handled those very well.
- Action!
- Ferrets
- Rupert Grint. Captured Ron for this beatifully.
- Dan Radcliffe. Just keeps getting better.
- Myrtle. That actress just has it so so so right.
Things I disliked:
- Ralph Fiennes. Awful as Voldemort. Just not menacing at all in his depiction. Kind of pathetic, really.
- World Cup. Too much, too fast. If they were going to cut this much, why have it at all? It's not as if we could actually see anything going on with the Death Eaters.
- Death Eaters = Klan. Those hats. argh.
- Felt like the action version of GoF, as they cut out all the other plots.
- Still doesn't feel like they attend a damn school, with everything they cut out.
- Lack of subtlety. As much as I love Tennant, I'm still pretty sure that I wish they didn't give the game away in the very beginning of the damn film.
- Missing characters. No Charlie, Percy, Mrs. Weasley, Bagman (although really I was happy to see that plot gone). Although with Bagman gone and no cash with the prize, how are they going to explain how the twins open up the joke shop next film? No gold!
- Miranda Richardson. Really, why did they leave the Skeeter plot in there at all? Didn't serve any function, and I'd rather have seen one of the other plots brought back.
- Might as well have ditched the Madame Maxime + Hagrid plot for all the good it did in the film.
- Music wasn't very good.
All told, I disliked it, but I may go see it again to see if it grows on me. I know I have a tendency to be too picky with the films that I enjoy (particularly those made from books), so perhaps I'm just being harsh. We'll see.......
