An Open Letter to the U.S.A.

Jul 05, 2008 06:06

Dear America,

In 1778 you entered into your first Native American treaty with the Lenape tribe (aka the 'Delaware'), in exchange for their allegiance and aid in helping you defeat the British. What you may have forgotten is that one of the stipulations of this treaty demanded that after the Lenape helped you defeat the aforementioned enemy, you would, in turn, create a nation state in which the tribe could reside. I believe your exact words were:

And it is further agreed on between the contracting parties should it for the future be found conducive for the mutual interest of both parties to invite any other tribes who have been friends to the interest of the United States, to Join the present confederation, and to form a state whereof the Delaware nation shall be the head, and have a representation in Congress.

Since the Lenape tribe fulfilled their side of the agreement, but currently reside in Oklahoma (yet another victim of the "Trail of Tears"), I can only assume this slipped your mind. It is was your birthday, afterall, and sometimes excitement can cause us to forget important obligations. Therefore, I am sending you a friendly reminder that 'Delaware' is not just the interesting name of a state on the east coast.

I'll let the Lenape tribe know to expect a phone call from you soon.

Ciao,

Sina

if i were someone else i might be flamed
