We put in an offer on some land today. Went from ‘never going to find anywhere’ to “oh that’s nice” to “sign here, and here, and initial here” so fast that I’m still quietly freaking. Course, they’ll probably decline and then there’ll be the back-and-forth of offer, counteroffer (which, incidentally, is what I’ve been doing on a Rav4 EV).

Are you prepared for a quick history lesson on EVs? So back in the late 90s California introduced legislation that meant that car makers had to produce a percentage of zero emission cars. One of these was the legendary EV1 from GM. Ford and Chevrolet built the Ranger and S10 pickups, respectively. And Toyota produced the Rav4 EV. Most of these vehicles were only leased, not sold. Many were reliant on a battery called the EV95 which was being made by Panasonic. To cut a long story short, Chevron killed the EV95 battery as they had ended up owners of the patent - requiring stocks of batteries recycled.
Auto makers tried to destroy all the cars, but people were very attached to them and with the exception of the EV1 I think at least a couple of hundred of most of them survive. The 2000ish Toyota Rav4 EV had a range of 90+ miles - and many seem to be still going with a range of 80+ miles.
In the US cars are so pricy that the only EV we have any hope of finding that can do my commute to work is the Rav4. Incidentally, the Zero Emission ( ... )

So, there are a few small stocks of batteries that, for whatever reason didn't get crushed, and it turns out that NiMH large format cells are remarkably resilient. There's also a company on the west coast that refurbishes the packs... But as it stands, no prospect of new cells being made, no...
