Vidders: please help.

I'm trying to encode small videos, made of clips from standard 350mb avi files, in Adobe Premiere Pro 5. To my mind, these ought to be smaller than 350mb--they're shorter and I'm adding nothing to them. But they come out at 2 or 3gb, which is absurd. Google's failed me so far. What am I doing wrong?

Don't ask me why it saves the files in huge huge sizes, I do not know the reason, but Premiere does. And I'm sure there's someone out there who can save small copies with Premiere (I know the option is there, at least in later versions than 5, but I still haven't gotten it to work). I usually save an uncompressed version in Premiere, ie when it asks you what you wanna use to encode the file, you choose "None", and then shrink it down with VirtualDub using this tutorial.

If everything else fails, you can use Windows Moviemaker to shrink the file, but then you'll have to settle for a .wmv file.
