about ten years ago i got one of those urban legend chainmails about the terrible health risks posed by modern menstrual supplies (search your favorite debunker for 'tampons and dioxin'). after doing a basic dictionary search for dioxin, and discovering that it isn't a microbe, it's a chemical, i websurfed my way through debunking articles, the ( Read more... )

Those little instead things just don't fit for me. I have a tipped cervix or something, and they dislodge if I do pretty much anything.

I would like to whine, however, about the loss of the OB with applicator tampons that I used to swear by.

I HATE HATE HATE plastic applicators and I find non-applicator tampons uncomfortable to place. (they are scratchy, basically) I don't understand why more compaines don't make the cardboard kind. Hrmph.

tampax does seem to be the last holdout for cardboard applicators. it was one of the other reasons i preferred them.

I find tampax tampons to actually be substandard. I usually use the playtex ones that are cardboard.

I've never had much trouble with any pads or tampons aside from the fact that after a few days they start to irritate my skin. But to be more environmentally friendly I picked up some reusable cloth pads from Whole Paycheck. They're much gentler on my skin and the planet, but inconvenient in two ways: (a) they're only held in place by on snap around your underwear, so they shift all over the place if you walk briskly, and (b) since they aren't disposable, if you have to change pads and aren't paces away from your washing machine you'd have to carry a ziploc bag of the grisly little things around until you could get home and wash them. So they're really only an option for quiet days at home.

I'm just going to use o.b.s and biodegradable pads from Whole Paycheck from now on, I think.

since no one has piped up to champion the reusable cups, i've decided to buy one, though it looks like i might choose the mooncup UK (from britain, not to be confused with the moon cup US, from cincinatti) even though i'd have to pay the import tax to get one - divacups are sold at the whole foods here, if you want to take a peek and maybe volunteer yourself. my choice is based on: lots of people love the divacup, and lots of people hated it and switched to the mooncup uk, which they then love. the reasons given for switching strike me as exactly the reasons i might be cranky with a divacup, and since they're easier to get, i rather get the pain-in-the-ass part out of the way, and if i'm not happy get the easy one after...i'm such a loon.
