last year we got a portion-controlled kibble dispenser. for a couple reasons, but mostly to make sure the kitties get fed on time even when we aren't home.  we've been having trouble with one kitty gaining a lot of weight, so i've been cutting back portions, recently i cut their portions in half again. so just now, theres one portion of kibble

Clever girl! If you want to adjust for the extra she's getting, maybe you could switch to diet kibble, or cut out the canned food, or maybe just set the dispenser to dispense smaller meals but more often?

i've already set the kibble portion as small as it will go (a quarter cup) and cutting her food in half meant dropping one of her two kibble feedings, and cutting her canned food from one and a half ounces to a half ounce. (since she eats more kibble than the other kitty i'm shorting her canned food a bit and giving a little extra to the kitty that doesnt eat much kibble) i've also already mixed her kibble half regular and half diet, but maybe going all diet isn't a bad plan. this crash diet is, of course, being overseen by our vet.
