So I played on a Wii last night for the very first time. To be perfectly honest, I was underwhelmed. Granted, I only played two games- Wii Sports and Red steel. The latter was as graphically advanced as goldeneye. Though gameplay-wise I thought it was somewhere a little behind. Though, what nintendo were expecting from ubisoft I have no idea. Wii sports I felt was similarly lacking. Its no wonder it comes free with the console since they'd probably lose money trying to sell it.
I'm willing to accept that Zelda is a much better example of a Wii game but is it any better than the GC version? More to the point, whats the point in forking out 200 quid to play zelda when you could have spent 30 (assuming you already have a gamecube) to play it. Sure you have the "innovative" control system (I'll get to that soon) that lets Link react to your movements but in a game originally built for a traditional control system, I don't see what Nintendo could have squeezed in to make it any more interesting
Now then, the big deal about the Wii is its newfangled motion sensor technology. Though perhaps what I mean is oldfangled. I'd like to draw your attention to this
http://uk.gamespot.com/news/2878933.html?q=eyetoy .
Sony's eyetoy. A peripheral released a good 5 years ago for the ps2. I'm aware of the obvious differences but the general idea is the same- controlling games using motion sensing technology. So Nintendo have basically re-packaged 5 year old technology, given it a shiny make-over and are selling as their latest innovation. Tsk tsk.
So, last-gen graphics and last-gen tech. You'd think they'd at least start pumping out games in these first few months, to keep up interest while the gimmick is still fresh. Right?
Well I had a look at Play.coms topseller list (
http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/STTS/5-/TopSellers.html ) and uh, well.
1st place belongs to the new sonic game. Despite the last few sonic games, i've heard decent things about it, so alright.
Warioware I have no complaints about. I've heard nothing but good things.
But it all goes downhill from there. In the top 20, 11 are games. 5 are ports from other consoles. The others are a mishmash of board-game remakes, games that would have looked good 10 years ago (Whens the last time anyone enjoyed a Rampage game? And don't get me started on Rayman.) and games that have been described as no better than tech-demos.
Though its nice to see that Nintendo offer different coloured covers for the controller :).
Launch line-ups are always bad but I think this one takes the cake.
I really think Nintendo have dropped the ball on this one. Gimmicks work in the handheld market because its not as competitive. Plus, they actually like, release good games on the DS. Nintendo have argued that they aren't trying to compete with Sony and Microsoft and instead are trying to push the industry in another direction but I think its more a case of them being unable to compete and are instead holding the industry back with obsolete gimmicks.
But regardless, I think this has gone on enough.
tl;dr fuck you, Nintendo.
What does everyone else think? I want to hear different peoples opinions on the Wii.
