Dinners Ready

Today had been long, it hadn’t rain for once but a cold wind blew through New Caprica City and into their tent. Kara was inside cooking dinner enjoying being warm for the first time that day.
“You know you save the celery for tomorrow or at least only use half of it. The noodles will fill us up well enough for tonight” Sam commented as he came in the door.
“Sam I’m the one who knows how to cook? Remember?” Kara said as she irritably stirred the pot of noodles for their dinner.
“True but I know a lot more about stretching food than a Caprica City kid like you” Sam joked.
“Are you trying to say I had a cushy childhood” Kara glared.
Sam raised his hands “I would never say that, but you did have plenty to eat, which is less true of how I grew up”
Kara turned back to her cooking hands shrugged “You might have a point there, although what’s with the Caprica City crap you lived there almost longer than I did”
“Ah but I didn’t grow up there, I grew up on Picon where people earned the dinner by the sweat of their brow in mines, or at least when the company paid enough so that we could all eat dinner “ Sam intoned.
Kara knew he was mostly joking and she had always had enough to eat and wear and never really went without the way Sam had. It was still somewhat irritating to have that treated as though she had everything handed to her. Callie had really been on a roll today about “Caprican Privilege” and she had definitely heard enough of that crap to last a lifetime. “Yeah because no one on Caprica ever went without dinner” she snarked back.
“Sorry babe, I spent most of today’s council session listening to the Sagitarons complaining about the food distribution. It got me remembering all those long cold winters “Sam said tiredly, not so much apologizing as explaining.
“Well it not like you complains about it all day like frakkin Callie” Kara said walking over and letting him pull her into his arms.
Sam grinned and said “I don’t think anyone could complain about anything as much as Caliie does these days”
Kara grinned and relaxed slightly “I think she’s using the pregnancy as the excuse to say every damn thing on her mind. When she talking about Baltar its great but when she starts in on Caprica or the chief I start wishing it’s still okay to smack her”
Sam chuckled and pulled his cigarettes out of his pocket. Kara got up abruptly and growled “we’re gonna eat in a minute. What the hell happened to quitting anyway?”
Sam put the smokes on down on the bed “Baby you wouldn’t like me without my smokes” he joked.
“I wouldn’t like you dead either” Kara shot back.
Sam sighed “Kara I spent way too long soaking up rads on Caprica for a few smokes to make a difference now”
“That’s ridiculous” Kara snorted.
“Can we not have this fight now please? I missed you today and I’m too tired to fight” he leaned over and looked her right in the eye, grining his most chaorming smile .
Kara tilted her head and grinned back wryly “so does that mean I might wear you down?”
“Nope” Sam laughed and pulled her back onto the bed with him and she laughed too, in spite of herself. She was just about to kiss him when she heard the telltale hiss of a pot boiling over and she leapt up.
“Dinners ready” she said dropping the pot on the table.
