When it rains, it pours
So the new 1TB drive works for about half a day, I get everything reinstalled, seems fine. I decide "let's see how fast this thing is", do a benchmark on it in HD Tune. About 460GB through, it throws a read error. Long story short and a lot of troubleshooting later, this is what smartctl is telling me:

Can't say I'm really all that surprised seeing as I've had this drive for quite a long time (1191 days/3.2 years of uptime according to smartctl), but my 500GB drive's dying. Got a chkdsk /r running on it right now and it's spitting out bad sectors ( Read more... ) -

Full semester classes start today, so half an hour before I think I'm supposed to go to class, I check my schedule online just to confirm everything (I mainly wanted to know what room I had to go to). New HSF arrived early.
Took about half an hour to install, didn't even need the instructions, it was pretty obvious how it all went together, learned something new about my system I didn't know about. Specifically the presence of two more SATA ports on the Intel ICH10R controller and one more SATA port on the JMicron controller, so I put my 1TB drive on one of the Intel ( Read more... ) -
Had to happen sooner or later...
Last night in the middle of playing Global Agenda I noticed upon alt-tabbing out of the game to do a Google search that my CPU core temps were in the mid-90s (when normal for a singlethreaded process is about 30C lower than that). CPU fan (it's the stock Intel garbage) was doing 900RPM, when it's supposed to top out around 2000. Sprayed the dust ( Read more... )
