Okay, so I think this is what you should do (I apologise in advance for any spelling errors or if I'm not 100% clear or whatnot, I'm a little not sober): I think you should french braid your hair and then tuck the end of the french braid under the already-plaited part after tying it off. Sort of like this? http://hairstyleandhaircuts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Tucked_Dutch_Braid_Hairstyle_View_11.jpg
It should work for hair that short. Or you could do a french twist, which is always super classy but never works for my hair because it's too thick and long. If push comes to shove, you can always do the half-ponytail dealio but with a french/regular braid or a HERRINGBONE BRAID, which takes some getting the hang of but looks fresh as fuck.
They're all pretty simple and elegant. And if I could, I would definitely lend you my hair for the day. My hair is pretty jank lately, though.
I'll have to see what I can do, because my hair has a lot of layers so not all of them can reach the back. With some gel I could probably master this beast though.

I figured I'd just straighten it, but that's so boring. And it always ends up flippy.
I think you should let me rent your hair for a day. That would be shweet.
