Symbollically, giving birth is linked to the creative drive, the urge to make a creative idea manifest in tangible terms, to bring something out into the world. This is present in the artist putting paint on a canvas or a writer putting words onto paper. The sexual drive is also another expression of the creative drive. Such a negative dream about the birthing process would seem to point out to some sort of insecurity about your own creative drive - Is what I'm putting out into the world good enough? Will the outside world except my creative thoughts and ideas? What is this junk I'm making?
I guess it doesn't have to be literally a something you're making, in the sense of something physical - it could be about your own personal self-expression. ("Can I really be myself around these people ( ... )
