I found the same thing - first and second year papers gave me between 1500 and 2500 words and I was expecting more in the third year but no.
All I can think is they are trying to keep us concise - but in my last essay I had to drop details of method beyond my comfort zone in order to include pertinent facts found in research. It's frustrating.
Yeah, in my last 3rd year essay I ended up going nearly 1,000 words over limit. Haha. I'll probably get marked down for it, but I don't really care. I cut out everything I possibly could, Maybe they won't notice. :P
I was of the understanding that cuts in essay length are to bring the essays in line with expected workload, since the weighting of courses has been getting rejiggered for ages.
And some lecturers are just slack about marking, while others mark the moment they get the essays in.
Hmm, possibly. Hadn't thought about that. I think the problem is that we have 3 different lecturers who need to find time to meet and discuss everything.
Honestly? They're probably catering ot the falling literacy capabilities of the masses.
Does that sound wanky and elitist? I don't care.
The general capabilities and being botheredness of students is dropping quite alarmingly in many places and now the educational systems are being altered to lower the bar, so the failure rate of any given institution doesn't get too high.
Need I even mention NCEA?
The same thing is happening here - they're throwing a lot of subjects at the school kids but expecting far less from them, in any given area, and it's really beginning to show. :(
