Stephen King's The Mist (spoilers)
Just watched "The Mist" on one of the Movie Network channels. The movie was a good monster movie, with all the right buttons being pressed.
The beauty of the film was in not knowing what was going on outside the little world of the trapped people.
The terror was in the creepy crawlies and the suspense built around them. The madness was in the people descending into a religious mob whose motives are driven by all the base emotions that surround most such acts.
The horror was in the ending. Speaking as a father, knowing the character killed his son in order to keep him from being eaten alive by any number of dangerous creatures was bad enough. Seeing him realize that if he had only waited five more minutes they all would have been safe and he would not had to have made that decision was even worse. The music they used ("The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance) heightened the emotional impact..
