Chapter 5 ================================
Adam was sitting in the back of an SUV when his cell phone suddenly began playing “Islands in the Stream.” He smiled, realizing that it could only be one person.
“Hey.”
“Hey!” said Danny. “I wasn’t sure I’d catch you. Are you at the stadium?”
“Not quite yet. Almost there.”
“How’s London?”
“Rainy. Our flight was delayed from Glasgow. It’s an hour and a half flight and it took us over seven hours,” complained Adam. “We should’ve just taken a train. So we basically came directly from the airport. After this, no more back-to-back dates from now on unless they’re in the same city.”
“Well, you’ve learned something anyway, so now your next European tour will go much smoother.”
“I’m just glad tonight’s the last night of this tour. I mean, I’m excited for tonight. I love London. I love being on tour. It’s just…”
“You’re tired,” supplied Danny.
“I’m exhausted. And homesick,” sighed Adam. “I don’t want to talk about me anymore. Tell me about your day. What have you been up to?”
“Are you sure you want to hear? I don’t want you to get jealous.”
“Please?”
“Okay, well, I just got back from Costco, which means I got about seven years worth of groceries.”
“Did they have any good samples?”
“Little root beer floats.”
“Oh, God, that sounds so good.”
“I’m glad you said that because I got suckered into buying some, which is why I still need to go to the drycleaners, since I had ice cream melting in the trunk and couldn’t really stop.”
“Why do you need to go to the drycleaners?”
“To drop off my gray suit. I spilled wine all over it last night.”
“Oh my God! The benefit! How did it go?”
“It went really well. Brought in lots of money.”
“I’m sorry,” said Adam, sounding frustrated. “I forgot all about it.”
“That’s all right,” soothed Danny. “You’ve got a lot on your plate right now.”
“How did everyone like your set?”
“I think they liked it. I kept getting asked when I was going to release the CD.”
Adam sighed heavily. “I wish I could’ve been there.”
“Come on, cheer up. You’ve got a show to do,” said Danny. “Then you’ll be home in less than twenty-four hours.”
“I wish I was home right now,” said Adam quietly. “I miss you.”
“I miss you, too.”
They go quiet for a minute, content in just being on the line with each other.
“I almost forgot,” said Danny. “Your mom was over yesterday,”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah, and she brought a present.”
“A present?”
“It’s a plant. A ficus or something. I forget what it is. Anyway, it’s just a tiny thing. I reminded her of our busy schedules and how we’re not so good with plants. Well, she said she’d be more than willing to help us out if that was the reason, ya know, we weren’t ready to have a ‘plant.’
It took a second for Adam to fully comprehend the conversation.
“Wait. What?!”
“Apparently your mom is willing to ‘plant’-sit for us,” explained Danny. “Ya know, if that’s something we wanted. ‘Plants.’”
“You’ve gotta be kidding. She seriously…”
“It was fine. I love your mom. It just took me about twenty minutes to figure out that we weren’t actually talking about plants. I kept telling her about all the actual plants that had met their demise because of my lack of a green thumb. I was horrified when I realized what we were really talking about. I’m surprised she didn’t take the plant back home with her when she left.”
“She’s a subtle one.”
“You know, we’ve never really had a discussion about ‘plants.’ Maybe that’s something we can talk about when you get home.”
“On one condition.”
“What’s that?”
“We stop using the term ‘plants.’”
Danny chuckled. “Right. We’ll say ‘kids.’ Less confusing.”
“Actually, there’s one more condition.”
“Okay?”
“Let’s wait a bit for that talk once I get back. I need at least a day to relax in my own bed, specifically with you in it.”
“I think that can be arranged.”
“And a root beer float.”
Danny laughed.
“Anything else?”
“So much more. But you’re going to have to use your imagination because we’re pulling into Wembley so I’ve got to get going,” said Adam. “Holy crap this place is big.”
“Hey, when is your flight coming in tomorrow? I want to pick you up.”
“I thought we decided that wasn’t a good idea after what happened last time.”
“I couldn’t help it. I missed you. I didn’t realize it would nearly cause a riot of fangirls.”
“Maybe if you hadn’t been so…enthusiastic.”
“I didn’t hear you complaining.”
“And you won’t. But I think we’re now on a TSA watch-list," joked Adam. "Which makes travel a little challenging.”
“Fine. I’ll behave and wait for you at home.”
“Good. I’ve really got to go now. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Okay. Have a great show!”
“Thanks. I love you.”
“I love you more.”
Adam smiled wistfully.
“Impossible.”
